Thinking of rowing
Do I need any previous rowing experience?
No. We welcome complete beginners and will help you learn the basics before heading out on the water.
What age do I need to be to start rowing?
We welcome rowers of various ages. Please contact us to discuss current age requirements and available crews.
Do I need to be super fit?
No, you don’t need to be incredibly fit to row. You will pick up the technique and develop strength the more you attend. Of course, a good level of fitness helps, but it isn’t essential if you’re just starting out!
What do I need to wear?
We recommend a comfortable pair of shorts or leggings, a hoodie or jacket and a pair of wet shoes (not trainers). See our rowing kit poster for more details.
What do I need to bring with me?
We recommend bringing:
- A bottle of water
- A towel
- A change of clothes
- Something warm for after your row
Do I need to bring a full crew?
Absolutely not! If you have a group of four ready to go, that’s great, but if not, don’t worry. We have lots of individual rowers who we can group you up with.
When do you train?
This changes depending on the time of year.
Currently we are training on:
- Monday: 5.45pm to 8.30pm
- Wednesday: 5.45pm to 8.30pm
- Friday: 5.45pm to 8.30pm
During peak season we may open additional training nights.
You don’t have to attend every session, once a week is absolutely fine.
Is rowing safe?
Safety is a top priority at Whitby A.R.C. All sessions are supervised by experienced members and follow established safety procedures.
What if I’ve never rowed before?
Don’t worry, we have plenty of experienced rowers around to help and designated coaches there to support, guide and teach you how to row!
Can I try rowing before becoming a member?
Yes. We encourage anyone interested in rowing to contact us and discuss opportunities to experience the sport before committing to membership.
How often can I row?
This depends on the training schedule, crew availability, and your own availability. Many members row regularly throughout the season.
Is rowing competitive?
We have 5 race days scheduled from May to August, with race categories for a range of ages varying from U14s to the Over 60s. We also hold lots of in-club race nights and activities which are great for practice.
How do I keep up to date?
Keep an eye on our social media pages! We also have a Facebook group and Spond app exclusively for rowing members, which we use to plan, organise and discuss all things rowing and training. Ask us if you’d like to be added.
